1 Beginner

Kawaii and chibi anime girls

Large shapes, few materials and simple shadows. Focus on skin, eyes and one main color.

2 Intermediate

Shoujo and gyaru anime girls

Long hair, makeup, folds and accessories for practicing layers and textures.

3 Advanced

Magical and mecha anime girls

Lighting effects, metal, backgrounds and different materials within a single illustration.

ⓘ Printing: use paper of at least 160 gsm when applying several pencil layers, and check that it is compatible with your printer.

Tips from your teacher

How to color anime girls step by step

Decide on the light direction first and work in gentle layers. Reserve the strongest contrast for the eyes and the focal point.

1

Skin and face

Apply a light base and add shadows beneath the bangs, nose, neck and sleeves without pressing too hard.

2

Hair in sections

Divide the hair into large sections, preserve a band of light and deepen the roots and overlapping strands.

3

Eyes, clothes and details

Create a gradient in the iris and distinguish fabric, leather, metal and accessories through different reflections.

✦ Blending: slightly vary the direction of your strokes with each layer to reduce visible lines and gradually increase saturation.

Color and personality

Three palettes for anime girls

Use one dominant color, two supporting colors and a dark tone for eyes, outlines and small details.

Kawaii and chibi

Luminous pastels

Pink, mint, sky blue and soft yellow for cute characters and peaceful settings.

Shoujo and romance

Lavender and pink

A delicate combination for dresses, flowers, long hair and elegant scenes.

Mecha and magic

Neon and metal

Electric blue, violet, bright green and gray for technology, spells and intense reflections.

Preparation and materials

Materials for printing and coloring anime girls

You do not need a huge pencil collection. A small palette and suitable paper make layers easier to control.

1
Colored pencils

Build up skin, hair and clothes with gradual layers.

2
Drawing paper

Paper between 160 and 200 gsm offers greater durability for shading and blending.

3
White or light-colored pencil

Helps soften transitions and restore small highlights.

4
Optional fineliner

Can reinforce technological details, eyelashes or accessories at the end.
