Tips from the teacher

How to color anime and kawaii characters

Choose a consistent light direction, build thin layers and save the strongest contrast for the eyes, hair and main focal point.

1

Soft skin

Choose a base color for the skin and build thin, even layers. With light from above, shade beneath the bangs, nose and chin and where clothing overlaps the skin.

2

Hair in sections

Divide the hair into large sections, keep a band of light and darken roots and overlapping strands.

3

Eyes and clothes

Create a gradient in the iris and use contrast to distinguish cotton, bows, metal and accessories.

✦ Tip: vary the direction of your strokes between layers. This reduces visible lines and builds saturation gradually.

Color and personality

Three palettes for anime and kawaii characters

Use a dominant color family, a contrasting color and a dark shade for eyes, outlines and small details.

Pastel kawaii

Pink, mint and sky blue

A soft combination for dolls, chibi characters and sweet scenes.

Romantic shoujo

Lavender, pink and blue

Delicate shades for long hair, dresses, flowers and elegant settings.

Mecha and magic

Neon and metal

Electric blue, violet, bright green and gray for technology and glowing effects.

A process that is easy to repeat

Color from the large shapes down to the details

Plan the lighting before adding details. Reserve the white of the paper for bright highlights, then build the main colors and shadows together.

1
Choose the style

Decide whether it will be pastel, romantic, bright, urban or futuristic.

2
Apply the base layers

Work on skin, hair and clothes with light, even layers.

3
Add shadows

Deepen the bangs, neck, folds, roots and overlapping areas.

4
Finish the eyes and highlights

Refine the lashes, irises and small accents last, keeping the highlights you planned at the start.

Frequently asked questions

How to use this category

Where can I download the drawings?

Open the Anime Girls, Kawaii Dolls or Kawaii Princesses collection in English. Choose a drawing and check its file details before using the download link on its card.

How should I print a drawing?

Center the drawing and keep its original proportions. Check the print preview for cropped edges or stretching. Use paper supported by your printer and suited to your coloring materials, and test the printed ink before adding wet media.

What is the difference between anime, chibi and kawaii?

These collections contain anime-inspired illustrations. The chibi examples use small bodies and large heads, while the kawaii examples emphasize cute expressions and rounded shapes. The labels can overlap: a character can be both chibi and kawaii.

Which collection is best for beginners?

Choose a drawing with broad, open shapes and few small details. Many kawaii dolls and chibi characters fit this; difficulty depends on the individual illustration and the effects you want to create.

Can I use different colors from the usual ones?

Yes. Change the hair, skin, clothes and eyes to create your own character, keeping a coherent relationship between light and shadow.

Can I share my colored drawing?

Please read the drawing usage license before sharing or reusing a drawing. Include a credit to Javier Origin with your colored result.
