Tips from your teacher
How to color skin, hair and dresses
Work on the large areas first and leave jewelry, embroidery and highlights until the end.
Skin with gentle layers
Apply a light base, then build shadows under the bangs and chin, beside the nose and where the arms overlap the dress. Keep your pressure light.
Hair in sections
Divide the hair into large groups, preserve a band of light and darken the roots and overlapping areas.
A dress with depth
Darken the inner folds and reserve highlights on areas of fabric facing the light.
Color and personality
Three palettes for fantasy princesses
Choose one dominant color, two supporting shades and a metallic or bright accent.
Pink, lavender and sky blue
A soft combination for cute characters, romantic dresses and bright worlds.
Blue, ivory and gold
Deep blue, warm white and gold for an elegant, ceremonial look.
Green, earth tones and coral
Natural shades for floral dresses, leafy crowns and outdoor scenes.
An organized process
Color from large shapes down to the details
This order helps preserve harmony in the palette and keeps the embroidery from dominating the illustration.
Decide whether the princess is classic, magical, adventurous, nocturnal or inspired by nature.
Color the skin, hair and dress with soft, even layers.
Strengthen folds, hair roots and areas beneath arms and accessories.
Add pale highlights to the crown, earrings, embroidery and eyes.
