Pastels, autumn shades or bolder colors?
There is no required palette. I find it helps to choose one main color and repeat it in two or three details to bring everything together.
For a delicate look, try a cream hat with a pink polka-dot bow, a lavender dress and warm gray boots. For an autumn mood, switch to terracotta, ochre and brown. Or try the opposite: a dark blue hat, a pale dress and small touches of turquoise on the bows.

How to color the hat, braids and boots
This drawing has plenty of details, but you can work on one part at a time. You do not need to finish it in one sitting.
Hat and polka-dot bow
Apply a light first layer to the brim and keep the bow’s dots pale. Then darken the area beneath the edge slightly: that contrast helps separate the hat from the hair.
Long braids
Follow the direction of each strand with light strokes. Leave small white spaces for shine and deepen the points where the braid sections meet with a darker shade.
Dress and boots
Begin with the broad areas of the dress and save the ruffles for last. On the boots, a darker color beside the laces and sole can add volume.
If all the details become confusing, color just one area first, step back for a moment and decide which to do next. I usually work in light layers: there is always time to deepen the color, but a heavily pressed layer is harder to erase.
