01 / An idea to get started

Sea blues for the captain’s clothes

Dress the captain in two blues and save the darkest for shadows. Gray softens the fur; green adds a little sparkle to the eyes.

02 / Enjoy the process

Soft fur, blue fabric and a ship’s wheel with character

The page already includes plenty of gray shading. Start with transparent pencil layers to preserve it, leaving the dark details until last. Keeping the face light helps prevent the hat from hiding the kitten’s expression.

  1. Preserve the lightest fur

Before coloring the clothes, identify the central strip of the face, muzzle and paw tips. Leave the paper white there if you like.

  2. Separate the garments with two blues

Color the jacket medium blue and the pants lighter. Darken beneath the lapel, beside the buttons and where the legs meet.

  3. Add the captain’s details

Finish the anchor, laces, ship’s wheel and sails with a well-sharpened tip. Repeat a little clothing blue on the sailboat to connect them.

Small touches that improve the result

THE FUR

Color the fur with short strokes

Work gray outward from the center of the face, following the tufts. Leave white gaps. Add more shadow beneath the hat and beside the neck, and much less on the muzzle.

THE HAT

Separate the hat from its brim

Keep the crown light and darken beneath the brim. Preserve a line of light along its edge. A fine shadow on one side is enough for the anchor.

THE JACKET

Add light to the buttons

Keep each button’s center light and draw a small dark blue crescent underneath. On the jacket, concentrate shadows beneath the arms and beside the laces.

THE ADVENTURE

Take care with the wheel and sails

For a wooden wheel, add a brown from your set and follow the rim’s curve. Keep the sails almost white, with a soft shadow beneath their folds: they are small and need light.

Would you like to add a background?

Try a cloud of very pale blue behind the kitten. Leave a small white gap around the whiskers and tail. You do not need to draw a whole harbor to suggest the sea air.

03 / From drawing to paper

Download the sailor kitten to print

For the JPG, choose portrait orientation, fit the complete image within the printable area and keep it centered and proportional. For a PDF, choose the version that matches your paper and print at actual size. Do not crop or stretch the drawing; keep the hat, wheel, boots and signature visible. The gray shading can guide your coloring.

For colored pencils, try matte paper with a little tooth. Choose a paper weight your printer supports. With markers, test a small area for bleeding or smearing and place a spare sheet underneath.
