01 / An idea to get started

Coral, muted red, and a touch of green

Coral fabric, muted red hearts, and green bows. A sweet combination with small contrasts. Start lightly: you can always build up the color later.

02 / Enjoy the process

Bring the braids and dress to life

Start with the center of the dress and leave the small decorations until last. Choosing the fabric color first makes it easier to decide which details should stand out. Sharp pencils help with the hearts; for larger areas, use the side of the lead with a light hand.

  1. Choose a repeating pattern

Color a short section of the border before continuing around the skirt. For example: a red heart, a coral diamond, and an uncolored gap.

  2. Build up the fabric in layers

Apply a light base, then deepen the folds starting at the waist. Keep the parts of the skirt projecting between her hands brighter.

  3. Finish with the hair and bows

Follow the curve of each section of the braid. Repeat the headband’s green in the bows to connect the top and bottom of the drawing.

Small touches that improve the result

THE HAIR

Leave a highlight in each braid

Follow the curve of each lock with ochre. Darken the overlaps and leave a light band through the center. That little highlight makes the braid look rounded.

THE FABRIC

Give the skirt volume

Add a second coral layer beneath the waist and beside the hands. Ease your pressure toward the center of each fold: light areas come forward, and dark areas recede.

THE DECORATIONS

Repeat the rhythm of the hearts

Test one section first: a red heart, a coral diamond, and a white gap. Repeat the sequence along the border with a sharp pencil. You do not need a new color for every shape.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

Keep the bows light

Deepen only the shadows beside the knots. Keep the ribbon edges light and leave parts of the sleeves white. This helps the decorations stand out while keeping the face the focal point.

Has one braid become too dark?

Try lifting a little pigment by dabbing with a kneaded eraser. Avoid dragging it over the printed lines. Keep the neighboring braid light to balance the overall effect.

03 / From drawing to paper

Print the complete doll without cropping the skirt

Choose A4 portrait and “fit to page.” Before printing, check that the headband, skirt edges, and shoes all fit. The hearts are easier to color at a generous print size.

Matte paper is often a good choice for colored pencils. With markers, test in a margin and place another sheet underneath. Check that your printer supports your chosen paper.
