01 / An idea to get started
A cheerful yellow, orange, and blue palette
Yellow and orange bring the cheer, while blue makes the dots stand out. Leave the collar and cuffs white to separate the outfit from the face.

Have a different set? Use similar shades. Make a swatch in the margin: the paper and your pressure affect the result.
02 / Enjoy the process
Combine dots and stripes without overloading the drawing
Choose the fabric and dot colors before starting. Coloring around circles is easier with light pressure and a sharp pencil. You do not need every color on every item: repeating two or three details creates a cheerful combination.
Color the dress fabric first
Work around each dot with a light orange layer. Continue through the broad areas and keep the circles clean for the blue later.
Repeat blue with a purpose
Use it on the outfit’s dots, some hat dots, and alternating stocking stripes. Leave the other stripes white or very pale yellow.
Add small shadows
Deepen beneath the arms, at the hat’s fold, and where the skirt approaches the legs. Finish the pompom with a curved shadow underneath.
Small touches that improve the result
THE POLKA DOTS
Take your time around the dots
Color the fabric first, moving outward from each circle’s edge with light pressure. Then fill the dots. Where a dot crosses a fold, darken its lower part slightly with the same blue.
THE HAT
Round the pompom with a shadow
Follow the fabric toward the hat’s tip and deepen the folded area with orange. Keep the pompom’s top light and shade underneath, avoiding a dark outline all the way around.
THE STOCKINGS
Let the stripes wrap around the legs
Keep each stripe lighter in the center and darker at the sides. Repeat the same sequence on both stockings; this gentle shift suggests the legs’ curves.
THE FACE
Keep her smile bright
Preserve the eye highlights and use very little color on the cheeks. On the pigtails, work from the hair ties toward the ends, leaving light gaps between locks.
Does the orange look patchy?
Add another light layer in a different direction before pressing harder. Gradually evening out the fabric makes it easier to keep the dots clean.

03 / From drawing to paper
Get your clown girl ready for an afternoon of color
For the JPG, choose portrait orientation and fit the complete drawing within the printable area, centered and with its proportions preserved. For the A4 or US Letter PDF, select matching paper and print at actual size. Check that the pompom, boots and signature remain inside the margins, without cropping or stretching.
For colored pencils, try matte paper with a light tooth. Check that its weight is compatible with your printer. With markers, test the printed ink for smearing and place a spare sheet underneath to protect the surface.
