Color guide

How to color a cat’s fur step by step

Do not fill the entire silhouette with a single shade. Build fur with gentle layers, follow its growth direction and preserve small light areas.

White cats

Use the paper for highlights and add cool gray, light blue or beige only in shadows, folds and contact areas.

Black cats

Start with dark gray and add blue or violet. Preserve light highlights on the back, face and edges of the fur.

Orange cats

Layer yellow, ochre, orange and light brown. Draw stripes following the form of the head and body.

From black and white to form

A simple process in four layers.

Fur texture emerges when strokes have direction, varied values and edges that are not completely uniform.

1
Choose the light and palette

Decide which side the light comes from and prepare three to five related colors.

2
Apply a very light base

Cover the fur with gentle pressure, keeping the paper’s tooth open.

3
Build fur and shadows

Use short strokes that follow the shape of the face, paws, chest and tail.

4
Define the eyes and details

Increase contrast in the pupils, eyelashes, nose and deep areas to guide the viewer’s eye.
