Practical guide
How to color a dog’s fur step by step
The key is not to draw every hair, but to follow its direction, separate light and shadow planes, and reserve contrast for the face.
Start with a gentle base layer
Apply the main color with light pressure to preserve the paper’s tooth and allow more layers.
Follow the direction of the fur
Your strokes should follow the form of the face, chest, legs and tail, rather than cutting across it.
Define the eyes, nose and muzzle
Increase contrast around the main features so the expression stands out from the rest of the coat.
Palettes inspired by real breeds
Color ideas for realistic dog breeds
Use these combinations as a starting point. Then lighten, darken or adjust their temperature to suit the lighting in your drawing.
Warm golds
Cream, ochre, gold and light brown for soft, luminous fur.
Classic tricolor
Warm white, reddish brown, black and soft beige for transitions.
Blue-grays
Light gray, slate blue and dark tones for a cool coat with highlights.
Before coloring
Prepare a simple palette for coloring dogs
You do not need dozens of pencils. Five or six carefully chosen colors can produce a cleaner result that is easier to control.
To preserve highlights and soften transitions.
Build most of the coat and its variations.
Defines deep shadows, eyes, nose and contact areas.
Adds atmosphere and keeps the coat from looking completely flat.
