A dog for practicing long fur
Skye Terrier coloring page
This Skye Terrier coloring page shows the dog standing with its tongue out and a coat full of tufts. The hair lines guide your coloring while preserving its shape. Download it for free, print it and choose a gray, cream or warm-toned coat.
Start with one tuft on the back before coloring the whole base. This lets you test your pencil color and pressure in a small area.

Follow the curves of the tufts: they change direction on the face, chest, legs and tail.

How to color the Skye Terrier’s long fur
Work on groups of tufts instead of trying to fill in every individual hair. Contrast between light and dark areas helps define them.
A light base
Apply the lightest shade with gentle pressure. Move your pencil along the lines and leave some paper showing for highlights.
Shadows between tufts
Add a darker shade where one tuft passes beneath another: under the ears, on the chest and between the legs. Avoid outlining them all with hard lines.
A few final hairs
Use a sharp point to add a few dark strokes following the curves of the fur. Vary their length and leave quieter areas so the coat does not look tangled.
If you need to practice layering, start with this guide to colored pencils and pressure control.
Prepare a simple combination
Color ideas for the dog and its expression
These suggestions are a starting point for the illustration. You can also invent your own combination.
Grays with a touch of blue
Use light gray as a base, dark gray for shadows and a very soft blue on selected tufts. Keep the nose and inside of the mouth darker.
Cream and soft brown
Combine cream, light ochre and brown in the shaded areas. Repeat the brown with gentle pressure near the muzzle and lower legs.
Eyes, nose and tongue
Preserve the white highlights in the eyes and nose. For the tongue, try a soft pink with a slightly deeper shadow beside the mouth.
Compare the shades in your pencil set using the Colored Pencil Atlas to choose grays and browns (in Spanish). Test them on a separate sheet before combining them on the dog.
Download, print and enjoy
Prepare the drawing and add a simple background
Fit the drawing to the page when printing and check that the tail and paws are fully visible. Leave the background white or add color around the dog.
Ground the dog with a shadow
Add a soft shadow beneath the paws and fade it outward with your pencil. You do not need a whole scene to stop the dog looking as though it is floating.
Materials for the details
Sharp pencils help with the tufts on the face. For paper and other supplies, see the colored pencil materials guide.
Color over several sessions
