Tips from your teacher

How to color an elf step by step

Start with the large areas and save the magical details for last. This helps keep the lighting consistent and the face as the focal point.

1

Skin and face

Apply a light base and add shadows beneath the hair, nose, neck and cheekbones using gentle pressure.

2

Hair in sections

Divide the hair into large groups, preserve a band of light and deepen the roots and overlapping areas.

3

Clothes and magic

Distinguish fabric, leather and metal with different textures, and use the strongest contrast for runes, jewelry or spells.

✦ Tip: avoid relying on pure black. Mix dark blue with brown or violet with green for richer shadows.

Color and personality

Three palettes for elven worlds

Choose a dominant color family and one or two contrasting colors for eyes, magic, jewelry and storytelling details.

Forest elf

Moss, earth and gold

Leaf green, olive, brown and gold for a figure that belongs among trees, leather and vegetation.

Dark elf

Violet and cool light

Midnight blue, violet, dark magenta and silver for a mysterious, powerful atmosphere.

Kawaii elf

Enchanted pastels

Pink, lavender, turquoise and soft yellow for a bright, youthful fantasy character.

Elf with flowers for practicing colored pencil layers
Paper, pressure and layers matter as much as your choice of palette.

Preparation and materials

Choose your technique for the finish you want

Each material creates a different texture. Test the colors on a separate sheet before applying them to the illustration.

1
Colored pencils

Ideal for layers, gradients, skin, hair and small details.

2
Markers

Create intense colors on clothes and backgrounds; check for bleed-through first.

3
Watercolor

Works well for forests and ethereal backgrounds on watercolor paper compatible with your printer.

4
Mixed media

Use watercolor for the surroundings and pencils for the face, hair and accessories.

The complete process

From printing to finishing touches

Follow this order to work calmly and keep the character easy to read.

1

Print

Choose drawing paper for pencils or paper specified for wet media. Check your printer’s supported paper types, thicknesses and weights before loading it.

2

Apply the base layers

Color the skin, hair and clothes with gentle layers without aiming for the final intensity yet.

3

Build form

Deepen shadows and preserve highlights on cheekbones, hair, clothes and metal.

4

Finish the magic

Add runes, tattoos, highlights, leaves and small color accents at the end.
