01 / An idea to get started
Salmon pink and light grays for a delicate tutu
Use salmon pink for the dress and soft grays to separate its layers. A touch of yellow in the flowers is enough to brighten the scene while keeping it delicate.

02 / Enjoy the process
Give the tutu layers, light and an airy feel
You do not need to fill the whole skirt with pink. Keeping white areas between the folds helps the dress look lighter. Start with a faint layer and look at the shading already on the page before deciding where to add more color.
Add color while keeping the whites
Apply a soft salmon layer to the bodice and the top of the skirt. Leave light bands running from the waist toward the edge of the tutu.
Separate the layers
Add light gray just below each ruffle. Fade the shadow downward so it does not look like a hard line around the skirt.
Finish the flowers, ribbons and bench
Color the flower centers yellow and keep the petals light. Use a sharp salmon pencil on the ribbons and finish with the shadow of the dress on the seat.
Small touches that improve the result
THE TUTU
Follow the folds outward
From the bow, work the salmon shade toward the skirt’s edge. Darken the creases and keep the centers of the rounded folds light. The whole tutu does not need the same depth of color.
THE RUFFLES
Separate the layers without hard lines
Add a narrow light-gray shadow under each ruffle and soften it with salmon. The lower layer can look a little cooler. Keep the projecting fabric edges light.
THE BUN
Let the flowers catch the light
Keep the petals white and add gray only near their bases. Use very little yellow in the centers. Follow the curve of the bun when coloring the hair and leave a light band for shine.
THE DETAILS
Take care with the ribbons and seat
Color the ribbons with a sharp tip, keeping the gaps around the legs visible. Deepen the tutu’s shadow on the bench. For warm wooden tones, add a brown from your own set.
When should I stop adding color?
After two or three light layers, look at the page from farther away. If you can tell the fabrics apart and the face still looks light, you can stop. Sometimes the best finishing touch is leaving a little white.

03 / From drawing to paper
Print the ballerina with the whole tutu visible
For the JPG, choose portrait orientation, keep the drawing centered and preserve its original proportions. Use the print preview to fit the whole drawing within the printable area, including the tutu, bench legs and ballet slippers. Avoid cropping or stretching.
Choose the A4 or US Letter PDF that matches your paper, then print it at actual size. Both formats include a margin around the complete drawing. You can use the existing gray shading as a guide when coloring.
Use paper with a light tooth for colored pencils, and check that your printer supports its weight and finish. For markers, test both the printed ink and the paper first and place a protective sheet underneath.
