Two friends and plenty of color ideas

Kawaii cat and elephant with hearts coloring page

A kitten in a party hat has climbed onto a little elephant’s head. Hearts float around them, giving this cheerful scene a relaxed, playful feel. Download the JPG or choose an A4 or US Letter PDF, then try a colorful party palette or a softer look.

There is room to try different shades on each character. You do not have to stick to the usual colors of a cat or an elephant.

These templates are separate from the drawing. Use the practice sheet to try layers and blends, and the blank chart to keep a swatch of each pencil.

Before you start

What to color first

I would start with the two friends and leave the party details until last. That way, you can choose the heart colors to suit the finished characters.

The elephant

Light gray works well, but you could also try lilac or soft blue. Use a slightly darker shade inside the ears and along the curve of the trunk.

The kitten

The body has broad areas you can take your time coloring. Keep the center of the face lighter and use a stronger shade on the cheeks or tail stripes.

The party

Save your favorite colors for the heart-topped hat, bandana, and floating hearts. Repeating one of those shades in two places helps bring the scene together.

If you are using colored pencils, start with a light layer, then deepen the shadows you want to emphasize. To compare possible shades for the cat and bandana, visit the Colored Pencil Atlas.

Make it your own

Three moods for the same drawing

This drawing tells a little story; a different palette is all it takes to change its mood.

Birthday party

Use yellow, coral, and turquoise for the hat, bandana, and hearts. Keep the bodies soft so the accessories stand out.

Storybook friends

Try lavender for the elephant and cream for the cat. A very pale pink background can complement them without drawing attention away.

Spring colors

Combine mint green, peach, and a touch of blue. Add small patches of color around the characters while leaving some of the paper white.

Download and print the full drawing

Save the JPG or choose the PDF that matches your paper. Then take your time coloring the kitten, elephant, and hearts.

For the JPG, choose portrait orientation and fit the complete drawing within the printable area, centered and in its original proportions. Keep the ears, tails, hearts, and signature visible, without cropping or stretching.

For a PDF, choose A4 or US Letter to match your paper and print at actual size. Both formats include a margin around the complete drawing.

Place another sheet underneath if you use markers; with pencils, build up soft layers on the ears and cheeks.

Before sharing the page, read the drawing usage license.
