Peeking through the bandages

Wide-Eyed Kawaii Mummy Coloring Page

All you can see between this little mummy’s wraps are its face and the tips of its toes. Those wide eyes almost fill the gap. Start with the broad strip across the forehead: there’s room to try out a fold before moving on to the tiny ones around the hands.

Try your colors before you start

Try two ochre strips. Leave one pale through the middle and shade the other along one edge. Record the combination that looks most like cloth on your swatch chart.

Golden wraps and blue-green eyes

In this version by @patro_espigares the wraps are warm, with violet skin showing between them. Open the picture for a closer look at where the strips cross.

Three details to look for

  • The forehead

The widest wrap stays pale between two toasted edges.

  • The eyes

A yellow-green crescent peeks out below the deep blue, well away from the white catchlights.

  • The toes

Violet turns up again on the toes. That small echo ties the face and body together.

What would weathered linen look like?

For a different take, try the earth tones from this Atlas palette on the linen and save Malachite Green for the iris. The example above uses patro_espigares’s own ten Polychromos pencils.

Starting with light layers

How to give the wraps some depth

  1. Save the light

Lay cream over the forehead wrap, keeping the middle pale.

  2. Find the lower strip

Where the arms cross, shade the lower bandage along the edge of the one above it.

  3. Color the iris

Add a crescent of color at the bottom and work around the white catchlight.

Four finishing touches

The knot

Use a sharp point to separate the two loose ends beneath the cheek.

The cloth

A few short strokes following the curve of a wrap suggest threads.

The skin

Try violet with very light pressure on one toe before moving up to the face.

The ground

Keep the shadow darkest at the feet and fade it toward the pebbles.

How do I keep the bandages from looking flat?

Choose two overlaps and build the contrast there first. Outlining every strip equally makes it harder to see which one is in front.
