A golden lamp for nievesfeg’s little bat

Blue-gray fur makes the green and yellow eyes stand out. Soft mauve fills the wings and inner ears, while the lamp adds warm tones and white highlights. The contrast gives the little bat and its perch their own distinct character.
Look at the highlights on the lamp
The small light marks on the shade and base suggest shiny metal. In your version, you can leave these areas light from the start and add just a few white touches at the end. Test the marker on a scrap of the same paper first and let it dry before touching it.
Materials used by nievesfeg
Paper: Canson XL Bristol, 180 g/m².
Faber-Castell Polychromos: 157, 181, 189, 135, 108, 154, 180, 283, 267, 173 and 175.
White accents: white POSCA acrylic paint marker.
You can use your own pencils: test a blue-gray, a mauve and an ochre before you begin.
Three ideas for your version
Dark fur with lighter areas
Start with a gentle layer and add short strokes following the tufts. Keep the forehead lighter and deepen the shadows under the chin and beside the wings.
Delicate wings
Use light pressure in the center of each wing membrane. Concentrate stronger color near the edges and wing bones, keeping a lighter area between them.
Metal through contrast
Pair a light ochre with brown around the shade edges. Leave a strip of light and repeat a small highlight on the base to connect the two parts.
How about plum-colored wings?
The “Bat: plum wings” creative palette
This Atlas palette uses Caran d’Ache Luminance: muted pinks, plum and dark indigo. It is an alternative to nievesfeg’s Polychromos version. Try the lighter shades in the wing centers and save indigo for the edges and deepest shadows.
The screen swatches are a guide. If you use a different brand, choose similar shades and test them on your paper.

Choose A4 or US Letter to match your paper and print at actual size. A JPG is also available. If you plan to print on Bristol paper, check that your printer supports it.
Try your colors before you start
Try a mauve gradient for the wings and an ochre-and-brown blend for the lamp. Write down your favorite colors before using them on the drawing.
