Take a moment to choose your pencils

Test your colors first

Before starting the kimono, test your pinks and greens on the same paper. These two templates serve different purposes: practicing blends and recording your favorite colors.

Hand-colored by Javier Origin

How I colored her with my pencils

I colored this version by hand with Faber-Castell Polychromos and Holbein Artists pencils. The pink kimono contrasts with the green hair, and the petals repeat that pink without filling the background.

Three details to look at

  • The hair keeps its highlights

Notice the pale strips that follow the curves of the strands. They are a useful reference for deciding where to leave less pigment.

  • The dress has depth

Darker pink folds alternate with light areas. You do not need to color the whole skirt with the same intensity.

  • The face has room to breathe

The color is gentle around the eyes and cheeks. That pale space helps preserve her sweet expression.

Another idea for your version

An Atlas palette for further experiments

Would you like to try another combination? This existing Atlas palette suggests coral, green and a muted red. It is an alternative to the example above, not the list of pencils I used for it.

From the first layer to the finishing touches

A simple way to color it

Start with light pressure so you can build up color gradually and decide which areas to keep lighter.

  1. Start with the light shades

Add a light first layer to the skin and kimono. Reserve the white of the eyes and the light strips in the hair before deepening the shadows.

  2. Follow the strands

Move your pencil from roots to ends. Add more color beneath the bun and near the neck; leave a light area on the broad curves.

  3. Connect the clothing and bows

Repeat the same pink in the dress, decorations and a few petals. Deepen the shadows near the sash and keep the background airy.

Four details to make your version stand out

THE HAIR

Green hair with volume

Try a light green base and a darker green beside overlapping strands. Follow each curve with long, gentle strokes. Avoid crossing from side to side across the hair.

THE KIMONO

Folds that read clearly at a glance

Place shadows beside the lines that fall from the waist. Ease your pressure toward the center of each fold. Alternating light and dark strips will make the fabric look more rounded.

THE BOWS

Separate the knot from the ribbons

Darken the center of the knot and the bends in the ribbons slightly. Keep their outer edges light so they remain distinct from the hair.

THE FLOWERS

Small details, a little color

Sharpen your pencil for the floral shoulder ornament and loose petals. Apply a gentle layer and leave some white gaps: small details disappear if you fill them too heavily.

Will the gray shading show through the pencils?

Yes. This page includes gray shading that can guide you. Test your color in a small area: light layers allow the drawing to show through, while pressing too hard can cover the details.

If you would like to practice first, find more ideas in the colored pencil learning guides.

Plan your next afternoon of coloring

Download the page and print it your way

Choose A4 paper in portrait orientation and “Fit to page”. Check that the bun, both ends of the hair and the kimono hem fit. Print at a comfortable size so you can enjoy coloring the flowers.

Which pencils can I use?

Use the ones you have. Try light layers with colored pencils and sharpen the tip for small details. To compare options, read the coloring materials guide.
