Quick species guide

Look at the shape before choosing colors.

We do not know all the colors dinosaurs had with certainty, so you can start with natural hues or invent your own version.

Predator Tyrannosaurus rex A powerful jaw and rough skin. Try dark greens, browns, grays and beige.
Agile Velociraptor A light body and fine texture. Cream, brown, muted orange and gray work well.
Defense Triceratops Horns and a bony frill. Combine earth tones with a lighter area on the face.
Giant herbivore Diplodocus A long neck and massive body. Use grayish greens, olive and bluish shadows.
Back plates Stegosaurus Separate the body from the plates with two color families to create contrast.
Your imagination Fantasy dinosaur Pastels, rainbows, neons or invented patterns: there is no single answer here.

Ideas to get started

Three palettes for your dinosaurs.

Use these combinations as a starting point and adapt the shades to the pencils in your case.

Prehistoric jungle

Deep greens, olive and a warm yellow for highlights and dry areas.

Earth and rock

Beige, terracotta and browns for natural-looking skin with depth.

Pastel dino

Mint, pink, lavender and coral for a sweet, bright kawaii version.

Coloring tips

Give your dinosaur more depth.

Three simple choices can transform a flat surface into skin with texture, weight and depth.

1

Start with gentle layers

Apply the base color with light pressure first. This lets you add shadows and adjust the color temperature without saturating the paper.

2

Define the form

Darken the underside of the body, the belly, the leg joints and areas facing away from the light.

3

Add texture at the end

Use dots, short strokes and small changes in shade to suggest scales without coloring each one separately.
