Soft green skin and a crystal-like horn

Patro pairs luminous green skin with orange eyes. Purple and turquoise make the tallest horn stand out, while warm earthy details balance the cooler colors. Light areas of the paper remain visible, keeping the drawing soft.

Look at the highlights on the horn

Narrow light strips separate the facets and suggest a crystal surface. Try leaving small areas uncovered and shading just one side more deeply. Start gently so there is room to build the color.

Three ideas to try with your pencils

  1. Start with a light layer

Test your green on a light area of the cheek. Let the drawing’s shading show through, then add another layer only where you want a stronger color.

  2. Separate the face from the frill

Deepen the shadow beside the face and under the chin. Keep the front of the muzzle lighter to preserve its rounded shape.

  3. Keep the eye highlights bright

Work around the white reflections with a sharp pencil. Repeat a little of the iris color in the claws or ground to bring the drawing together.

These are suggestions for your own drawing, rather than a record of Patro’s coloring process.

This mix of greens and earth tones also suits a dinosaur’s skin and frill. Start with light green, use earth green for transitions and save the darkest green for folds. Try raw umber on the horns and claws, with small touches of yellow for highlights.
