A scarecrow in red, turquoise and golden straw
Javier Origin colored this drawing by hand with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and Caran d’Ache Luminance white on 250 gsm white Clairefontaine Paint’ON Mix Media paper. The red hat and boots stand out beside the turquoise sweater. Ochres connect the straw, face and basket.

Three details to look at
- A visitor on the hat
The yellow bird stands out against the red hat. The turquoise hatband repeats the sweater color and connects the two parts of the drawing.
- Straw with light areas
Yellows and ochres run through the hair, bandana and pants. The lighter parts help separate the tufts and small straw tips.
- A textured basket
The wicker lines remain visible among the browns. Dark gaps and lighter strips help the basket retain its rounded shape.

Another idea for your version
An Atlas palette for changing the sweater
The creative palette “Potion: turquoise glass” suggests turquoises, purple, ochre and gray. Try it on the sweater, hatband and their shadows. It is an alternative for those areas, not the example’s material list: it does not reproduce the hat reds or all the straw and basket shades.

From the first layer to the finishing touches
Color the straw, clothes and basket in three steps
Start with light pressure. A soft layer lets you test the colors before deepening the shadows and small seams.
Prepare the light shades
Apply cream to the face and hands. Add yellow and ochre to the straw areas, leaving some parts light. Keep the first face layers soft.
Dress the character
Combine the red hat and boots with the turquoise hatband and sweater. Gradually darken beneath the brim and in the clothing folds.
Finish the small details
Work on the basket with browns, following the strips. Color the bird and grass, define a few seams and save white for the final highlights.
Four tips for this scarecrow
THE CHEEKS
A soft face
Test cream and ochre on a separate sheet before working on the face. Apply very light layers to keep the smile and small seams visible.
THE STRAW
Follow each tuft
Move your pencil from the base to the tip of each straw strip. Leave small light gaps and add ochre near areas beneath the hat.
THE BASKET
Separate the wicker strips
Deepen a few gaps between the strips with dark brown. Keep the basket’s center lighter and follow its curves so it does not look flat.
THE CLOTHES
Shadows in thin layers
Gradually add dark reds and turquoises to the folds. This lets you adjust the shadows while keeping the patches and seam lines visible.
Do I have to copy Javier’s colors?
No. His version is there to give you ideas. Change the clothes, invent another bird color or add an autumn background. Test two or three combinations on the color sheet first.
If you would like to practice first, find more ideas in the colored pencil learning guides.
Plan your next afternoon of coloring
Download the scarecrow and print it your way
For the JPG, choose portrait paper and “Fit to page”. Check that the bird and boots are fully visible. If you use a PDF, select the A4 or Letter size specified in the file.
Do I need the same pencils to color it?
No. Use the pencils you have and look for similar colors. The example’s names and codes are a reference. To compare options, explore the coloring materials guide.
What paper did Javier use?
The example was colored on 250 gsm white Clairefontaine Paint’ON Mix Media paper. Before printing on thick paper, check that your printer supports its type and weight. You can also color on other paper you already have.
