Warm-colored fur and blue eyes

In the version colored by soirolaba_scrap, golden and pink tones run through the fur, while the blue eyes create a cool contrast. Notice the light spaces on the cheeks: they help separate the tufts without darkening the whole face.

Three details to notice before you start

  • The fringe changes direction

The tufts curve and cross over one another. Look at each group separately instead of drawing every line parallel.

  • The muzzle has a smoother texture

The pink nose looks more even than the surrounding fur. That difference helps distinguish the two surfaces.

  • The eyes keep their highlights

Blue surrounds the dark pupils, while the white dots stay clear. Reserve those spaces from the beginning.

An exercise for this drawing

Three fur areas, three ways to move your pencil

These are suggestions for your own version, not a description of the colorist’s process. Practice them with a light shade and a brown pencil from your set.

  1. 1

    Fringe: long, curved strokes

Place the pencil point at the base of a tuft and lift it as you finish. Add a few dark lines where two groups of fur overlap; keep the outward curve lighter.

  2. 2

    Cheeks: short, outward strokes

Start near the muzzle and fan your strokes outward. Leave space between them to preserve the light. You do not need to trace every line of the drawing.

  3. 3

    Chest: downward tufts

Direct the strokes downward and add a shadow just beneath the chin. Ease the pressure as you approach the center of the chest to keep it bright.

If the fur starts to look like a solid patch

Stop adding layers to that area. Check your pencil point and move to a neighboring tuft using lighter pressure. It is easier to preserve the light gaps than to bring them back later.

Give the iris depth without hiding the blue

Try a soft blue on the iris and darken only the strip beneath the upper eyelid. Keep the highlights white and avoid covering all the color with black.

Holbein Artists’ Colored Pencils

Its combination of sandy and reddish tones suits a more autumnal version of this fur. It is a different suggestion from the Polychromos pencils used in the example.

Take a moment to choose your pencils

Test your colors first

Try three tufts with different pressure levels and a small blue gradient before starting. The test sheet helps you practice blends; the blank color chart lets you record a swatch of each pencil.
