nievesfeg’s interpretation
Purple, green and golden strands

CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 · Terms for the drawings and colored examples
In nievesfeg’s example, the purple hat pairs with a green band and green clothing. Golden hair brightens the sides of the face, while the scarf alternates warm and cool tones. The boots repeat the purple, connecting the top and bottom of the character.
Little stitches with plenty of character
The patches and frayed edges remain visible between the colored areas. A shadow beneath the brim separates the face from the fabric, and the green eyes retain their bright reflections. These are details you can observe in the example without assuming how the artist worked.

Ideas for your own version
Shape the curl and keep the hair light
These exercises are suggestions for your own version, separate from the techniques nievesfeg used.
- 1
Let the highlight follow the curl
Keep a light band running along the hat, even as the tip changes direction. Add soft layers of shadow on the opposite side and where the folds meet.
- 2
Separate the long strands
Draw fine lines from the roots toward the ends. Leave light spaces between groups of strokes and deepen only a few strands near the neck or behind the scarf.
- 3
Give patches and the scarf some depth
Shade beneath the patch edges and the loops of the scarf. Keep the stitches visible and avoid filling every small detail with a dark color.
Does the green get lost beside the purple?
Try a darker shadow on just one side of the hatband. Separating the light and dark values can help more than adding another color.
Worn boots without muddy colors
Concentrate shadows on the straps and beneath the folds. Keep a few worn edges light to preserve the texture of the drawing.
An alternative suggestion from the Atlas
A witch in purple and gold
Violet and gold · Faber-Castell Polychromos
The Atlas palette “Witch outfit: violet and gold” offers another direction for the outfit. Try the violets on the clothing, indigo beneath the brim and gold on small scarf or patch details. This is an alternative color suggestion: its five pencils do not replace the materials used by nievesfeg.
