COLORS THAT WORK TOGETHER

Turquoise, purple and a rainbow of notes

In soirolaba_scrap’s version, the turquoise body contrasts with the warm muzzle and belly. The eyes combine purple, pink and a golden ring, while the keys echo several of those colors to tie the character and instrument together.

Notice the edges of the eyes

The dark areas around the iris make the white reflections stand out. For a similar effect, keep those highlights clear and work around them with a sharp pencil. Leave the middle of the belly lighter and gently deepen the color at the sides.

Three ideas to try on your drawing

  1. Build shape with two turquoise shades

Lay down a light layer on the forehead and feet. Add a deeper turquoise beneath the hand, beside the neck and around the tail. Keep some lighter areas between the spots.

  2. Plan the colors of the keys

Sketch a few small boxes and choose your color order before you begin. Repeat just three shades or move from warm colors to cool ones. Darken each key’s edge to separate it from its neighbor.

  3. Use browns to suggest wood

Follow the supports with long, light strokes. Deepen the joints and the areas behind the keys. A soft shadow beneath the instrument will help it sit on the ground.

Give your dragon a different personality

Glass Fairy Skin · a creative Atlas palette

For a softer variation, try this palette of cream, light green, Venetian red, magenta and blues. Use green for the body, cream for the muzzle and magenta for the eyes or a few keys. A little blue in the shadows can bring the combination together.
