The areas of this drawing are clearly defined: first the tiger’s fur and stripes, then the dress, and finally the big bow. That lets you create plenty of contrast with just a few colors.

For a recognizable tiger, start with oranges, cream and dark brown. For a more imaginative version, let the dress set the palette and adapt the rest of the character.

A palette to get started

Which colors to use for this kawaii tiger

Orange is optional. Keep it for a traditional tiger look, or treat the fur as another part of your own color scheme.

Fur

Orange, cream and brown

Start with a soft orange and save cream for the light areas. Dark brown can replace black in the first layers to keep the stripes from looking too harsh.

Dress

Pink, lavender and peach

Soft colors contrast nicely with warm fur. Use one main shade and a slightly darker one just in the folds.

Bow

Turquoise, red or magenta

The bow is a good place for your boldest color. It draws the eye without requiring lots of different shades elsewhere.

Tips from the teacher

Color the tiger first and leave the stripes until last

Darkening the stripes too soon makes it harder to adjust the shape of the fur. It is easier to build up the base colors first and increase contrast gradually.

A soft base

Start the fur with light pressure, keeping some areas around the face and chest paler.

Add volume

Darken slightly beneath the head, beside the paws and in the areas farthest from the light.

Color the clothes

Treat the dress and bow as a separate area so their colors do not have to depend on the fur.

Finish the stripes

Once you have established the volume, strengthen the stripes and any small details that need more contrast.

Details that change the drawing

Give the dress its own personality

One of the most enjoyable parts of this drawing is that the tiger already has a natural pattern, while its clothes are completely open to your imagination.

1

Two colors are enough

Choose one for the dress and another for the bow. Then use lighter and darker versions of those same shades.

2

Do not fill every stripe with black

Dark brown, sepia or warm gray can preserve the tiger’s pattern without making its kawaii expression too harsh.

3

Save a small accent

A strong color in the bow or a dress detail can bring the whole palette together without overwhelming it.

Do I have to color the tiger orange?

No. Use orange, cream and brown for a classic version, or choose other colors to turn it into a completely imaginary character.

Which color works well for the dress?

Pink, lavender, turquoise, coral and blue pair well with warm fur. The simplest approach is to choose one main color and use a darker version in the folds.

Work on the fur’s color and shadows first. Once that base is finished, gradually add the stripes in dark brown or black.
