How to download and print this page

The drawing includes fur shading and a slender tail curving beside the body. Its calm pose invites careful work on the face: a light central stripe and darker sides quickly define the expression. You do not need to trace the outlines with a marker.

  1. Click Download the Rat Terrier JPG and save the original file to your device. If your browser opens the image, use its save-image option.
  2. Open the saved JPG and choose A4 paper in portrait orientation. Select “fit to page” and check that the whole drawing fits within the margins.
  3. Print in black and white. For sharper lines, try a slightly smaller print size on the sheet instead of enlarging the image.

The file measures 1200 × 1200 pixels. The button downloads the original JPG. There is no need to take a screenshot or print the website menus.

Three color ideas for this drawing

Follow one of these combinations or mix your favorite elements from each. Test the shades on a separate sheet before applying them to the drawing.

Black, white, and cinnamon

Keep the chest and muzzle stripe light. Deepen the markings with dark gray and add soft cinnamon beside the eyes and cheeks.

Warm browns

Combine medium brown on the back, cream on the chest, and darker brown on the ears. Apply the light shades first.

Gray and soft blue

Try a blue-gray tint on the markings. A warmer muzzle and inner ears help keep the face expressive.

Coloring tips

Focus on the expression before the details

1

Gently mark the light areas you want to preserve. Start with the chest and muzzle before filling the dark markings.

2

Use short strokes around the eyes and ears. Follow the small fur lines to preserve their direction.

3

Add the darkest shades last. Preserve the eye reflections and soften marking edges with light pressure.

To practice layers and shading before you start, follow the tips in Learn to Color.

Before you start coloring

How do I keep black markings from hiding the details?

Start with gray and add black only in the deepest areas. This lets you control the intensity and keep the fur lines and eyes visible.
