These templates are separate from the drawing. Use the practice sheet to try layers and blends, and the blank chart to keep a swatch of each pencil.
Warm shades for the mane and leaves
The hair and ground do not need exactly the same brown. Keep the mane lighter and save the strongest reds for a few leaves; a blue or green sweatshirt helps separate the character from the background.
Golden mane and blue sweatshirt
- Honey
- Caramel
- Soft blue
- Terracotta
Use honey and caramel on the hair, blue on the sweatshirt, and terracotta on a few leaves. Keep the other leaves lighter.
Chestnut and forest green
- Chestnut
- Cream
- Forest green
- Copper
Try a chestnut braid with cream highlights, green clothes, and copper leaves. Keep the face and centers of the ears light.
How to give the braid depth without darkening it all
Each overlapping section
Color one section at a time, following its curve. Darken the part that tucks beneath the next lock and reserve a highlight in the center of each shape. This makes the braid clear even with just two shades.
Mane and ears
Alternate light and medium locks around the face. Add a small shadow beneath the ears and muted pink inside them. The tail tip can repeat the hair colors.
The sweatshirt pattern
Apply a light layer to the fabric first, then color the motifs with a sharp point. Leave some shapes pale so the fabric does not compete with the braid.
Overlapping leaves
Color some leaves ochre, others copper, and just a few reddish. Darken the edge tucked beneath another leaf and keep some veins light. The large foreground leaf can take a softer shade.
Plan your mane colors with the Atlas hair palettes and find another combination for the leaves in the colored pencil palettes by theme.
