My hand-colored sea dragon
I colored this sea dragon with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. I chose pinks for the body and soft greens for the clothes, with a shell in warm shades. Use my version as a reference or imagine another corner of the ocean.

Three details to look at
- Pinks that follow the form
Notice the darker areas beneath the head, beside the ear and between the raised parts of the tail. Light spaces help show the volume.
- Mint green clothes
The jacket and pants have a soft color that separates the clothes from the body. Notice the shadows around the pocket, sleeves and collar.
- A shell with texture
Fine shadows define the shell’s lines. Keep some edges light and follow its ridges as you move the pencil.

This is the brand I used. If you have different pencils, look for similar shades; you do not need to buy a new set to enjoy the drawing.
Another idea for your version
An Atlas palette for further experiments
If you like the pink and green in my example, this existing Atlas palette offers another starting point: coral for the body, light green for the clothes and ochre for the shell. It is a suggestion for your version, not the list of pencils I used in the colored drawing.

From a soft layer to the final detail
How to color the shell, clothes and tail
The page already has soft gray shading. Use it as a guide and gradually add color without hiding the details in the first layer.
Choose three color areas
Decide on one shade for the body, another for the clothes and a different one for the shell. Apply light layers and preserve the white eye reflections.
Follow the curve of the tail
Work along its sections without crossing strokes from side to side. Deepen the inner curve and keep the protruding area light.
Finish with the shell and clothes
Sharpen your pencil for the shell ridges. On the jacket, add shadow beneath the sleeves, around the pocket and beside the collar, keeping the center lighter.
Four details to bring your dragon to life
THE SHELL
A fan of lines and light
Move your pencil from the shell’s base toward its edge. Add a fine shadow in the grooves and keep the raised ridges light. If everything has the same intensity, the ridges will be less visible.
THE TAIL
A clearly defined spiral
Try the dark shade on the inner curve of each section and soften it outward. Leave a small change in light where two segments meet; there is no need to darken the entire outline.
THE CLOTHES
Mint green with soft shadows
Give the jacket and pants a light base and a few darker layers in the folds. Use gentle strokes across broad areas to distinguish the fabric from the body’s raised forms.
THE FACE
Preserve its curious expression
Leave the white eye highlights uncolored. Add a little shadow beneath the muzzle and beside the ear. Keep the center of the face lighter to preserve its expression.
Will the gray shadows show through the coloring?
Yes, they can remain visible beneath light layers and help you create volume. Test a small area first. Add color with light pressure and check the result before continuing.
Is it a real seahorse?
It is a fantasy creature. Its long muzzle and spiral tail resemble a seahorse, but you can imagine its colors freely.

Plan your next afternoon of coloring
Download the page and print it your way
If you download the JPG, choose portrait orientation and fit the image to the page. Check that the horns, full tail and feet fit. If you choose a prepared PDF, use the matching paper size and print at actual size without cropping.
Which pencils can I use?
Use whatever pencils you have. Follow the pink and green combination in my example, or try a turquoise body, blue jacket and cream shell. Visit the colored-pencil materials guide for help choosing paper and working on small details.
Does the drawing include an underwater background?
The page has a white background. Keep it that way or add a few bubbles and a very light blue layer around it, leaving space beside the tail and shell.
