patro_espigares’s Catrina on gray paper
patro_espigares, a member of Lapiceros Unidos, hand-colored this Catrina with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils on 118 gsm Strathmore Toned Gray paper. The red roses stand out against the brown hair. The turquoise dress and green makeup details create a cheerful combination.

Three details to look at
- The paper is part of the picture
The gray background remains visible around the Catrina. The white face and small light highlights stand out clearly against that tone.
- Flowers and dress each have their own space
Red roses draw attention to the headdress, while turquoise flows across the dress. Green leaves complement the flowers without hiding them.
- The makeup keeps the expression clear
Green surrounds the eyes and red appears in small decorations. The mouth line and pale dots remain easy to recognize.

Another idea for your version
An Atlas palette for experimenting with the dress
The creative palette “Potion: turquoise glass” combines turquoise, violet, ochre and gray. Try it on the dress, its shadows and the earrings. This is an alternative for those areas, different from the selection patro_espigares used in the example; it does not include the reds of the roses or the greens of the makeup.

From the first layer to the finishing touches
Bring color to the flowers, makeup and dress
A light layer lets you try the combination before adding more color. Start with the broad areas and save small decorations for last.
Choose your two main colors
Pick one color for the flowers and another for the dress. Test them together on a separate sheet. Then add a green for the leaves and a brown for the hair.
Color the large areas
Start on the hair, petals and skirt using light pressure. Keep some areas pale and add more color where one petal or fold sits behind another.
Finish the face and decorations
Sharpen your pencil for the dots and lines of the makeup. Repeat one of the flower colors and finish with the earrings and dress edges.
Four details to make your version stand out
THE ROSES
Petals you can tell apart
Choose two intensities of the same color. Keep the edges of some petals lighter and darken the gaps between them. This preserves the flower’s shape without needing many colors.
THE MAKEUP
Small decorations, a pale face
Leave the face white or very pale and use just a few colors around the eyes. Color the dots with a sharp pencil point and avoid covering the smile lines.
THE DRESS
A little light between the folds
Give the dress a light first layer. Add a darker shade beside the folds and beneath the ruffles. Leave a pale strip across the wider areas to make the fabric look rounded.
THE HAIR
Follow the curve of the buns
Move your pencil in the direction of the strands. Leave a light area on each bun and concentrate dark brown near the hair tie and beneath the flowers.
Do I have to use gray paper like patro_espigares?
No. Gray paper is part of the colored version; the download is the black-and-white drawing. Print it on white paper and keep the face areas light. If you choose another paper, first check that your printer supports its type and weight.
If you would like to practice first, find more ideas in thecolored pencil learning guides.
Plan your next afternoon of coloring
Download the page and print it your way
For the JPG, choose portrait orientation and “Fit to page”. Check that the hair buns, flowers and shoes remain fully visible. If you use a PDF, choose the A4 or Letter size specified by the file.
Can I color it with different pencils?
Yes. Use the pencils you have and test the colors on a separate sheet first. The example’s names and codes are a reference, but your Catrina can wear a different combination. To compare options, explore the coloring materials guide.
