Take a moment to choose your pencils
Try your colors first
Before you begin, test the browns for the tail and the pink for the clothes on the same paper. These two templates serve different purposes: practicing blends and keeping a record of your favorite colors. The printable worksheets are available in English.

How soirolaba_scrap colored this squirrel
soirolaba_scrap, a member of Lapiceros Unidos, hand-colored this squirrel with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils on 180 g/m² Canson XL Bristol paper. The tail combines browns and golden shades. Pink appears again on the sweatshirt, scooter and little hearts.

Three details to look at
- The tail combines light and shade
Golden bands follow the curve of the tail, alternating with browns. Notice how the lighter areas help it look fluffy.
- Pink brings the character together
The sweatshirt, sneakers and scooter share pink shades. The plaid skirt adds a different detail without introducing lots of new colors throughout the outfit.
- The freckles still show
The face stays soft around the large brown eyes. Little freckles and pink cheeks remain visible without hiding the smile.

Another idea for your version
A creative palette to make the outfit your own
If you would like to change the clothing colors, the “Astrologer’s silk robe” creative palette combines pinks, gray and deep blue. Although its name refers to a robe, it also works for this sweatshirt and skirt. This is a separate suggestion from the pencils used by soirolaba_scrap in the example.

From the first layer to the finishing touches
Get your squirrel ready for a ride
Start with light pressure so you can build up color gradually and decide which areas to keep lighter.
Start with the light shades
Add a light layer to the face, clothes and tail. Leave the highlights in the eyes white and keep a few light bands between the tufts of fur.
Shape the hair and tail
Follow the fall of the ponytail with gentle strokes. On the tail, change the direction of your pencil to follow its curve. Gradually darken the areas farther back.
Finish the outfit and scooter
Repeat your favorite color on the sweatshirt and scooter. Then use a sharp tip for the plaid skirt and wheels. A small shadow beneath the scooter can complete the scene.
Four details to make your version stand out
THE TAIL
Make the tail look fluffy
Try an ochre base and add brown to the shadow bands. Follow the curve of the tail with fine strokes, leaving light gaps between them. You do not need to draw every hair to give it volume.
THE PONYTAIL
Strands that follow the curve
Start near the hair tie and move your pencil toward the tips. Keep a light band where the ponytail curves outward. A darker brown near the roots helps separate it from the hair around the face.
THE SKIRT
Small checks, gentle colors
Color the fabric with a light layer first. Then go over just a few lines in the pattern with a darker shade. You can repeat the pink from the sweatshirt and leave the rest gray or mauve.
THE SCOOTER
Wheels ready to roll
Keep a dark gray for the wheels and use the clothing color on the handlebars and deck. Look at the small edges before filling them in: leaving a few light helps the parts stand apart.
Will the gray shading show through the pencils?
Yes. This page includes gray shading that can guide you. Test your color in a small area: light layers allow the drawing to show through, while pressing too hard can cover the details.
If you would like to practice first, find more ideas in the colored pencil learning guides.
Plan your next afternoon of coloring
Download the page and print it your way
For the JPG, choose portrait A4 paper and “fit to page”. Check that the whole ponytail, tail and both wheels are visible. If you use a PDF version of the drawing, select the paper size specified in that file.
Which pencils can I use?
Use the ones you have. Try light layers with colored pencils and sharpen the tip for small details. To compare options, read the coloring materials guide.
