Crystal, fur and a little clock

Reindeer with Crystal Antlers and a Clock Coloring Page

The little clock barely reaches the reindeer’s hooves. Look up and its antlers split into points that look like cut crystal. There are two very different textures to play with on this page.

Test your colors first

Draw three triangles with touching edges. Try a different pressure on each one to plan the crystal reflections.

An idea for your own version

A weathered metal finish for the clock

The Verdigris Mail palette pairs greens with turquoise. Try turquoise on the rim of the clock, then repeat it on just one facet of each antler. It’s a small detail that ties the clock and the crystals together.

From the first layer to the finishing touches

Give the crystal antlers a glint

  1. Pick out the facets

Leave one facet of the large left point white and lay a thin turquoise layer on the next.

  2. Deepen one facet

Deepen the facet facing away from the light. Keep that direction on the other antler.

  3. Return to the clock

Echo the turquoise on the rim and save a pale crescent along its edge.

Four details to take your time with

Antlers

Keep the line between neighboring facets crisp to suggest cut crystal.

Forelock

Follow each lock’s curve and ease the pencil off at the tip.

Clock face

Keep the color around the hands light enough to show their shape.

Hooves

Deepen the bottom edge and keep a faint highlight on the rounded front.

How can I use the same colors for fur and crystal?

Blend the transitions in the fur and keep a clear change in value between the crystal facets.
