The legend of the Captain of Color

The lost treasure of the seven seas

Captain Orin was not searching for gold or jewels. He sailed to find the ocean’s lost color. Whenever someone colors one of these pirates, a spark of that treasure shines again.

These pages can become more than drawings: they can be maps, adventures, crews and scenes told through color.

Tips from your teacher

How to color leather, wood, metal and the sea

Decide on the atmosphere first: a bright adventure, warm sunset or dramatic storm. Then adapt every material to that same light.

1

Weathered leather

Mix ochres, browns and small cream highlights on boots, belts and straps.

2

Ship’s wood

Follow the direction of the grain and alternate warm browns with muted grays.

3

Metal and treasure

Place dark shadows beside light highlights on sabers, buckles, coins and chests.

4

Water and atmosphere

Repeat blues or turquoise from the sea in the shadows of clothing and skin to unify the scene.

✦ Mixed media: a light marker base can cover large areas. Add pencils afterward for shadows, texture and depth.
