Tips from your teacher
How to color a bear’s fur
Work on the large shapes first and add texture at the end. Drawing every hair from the start often creates a stiff finish.
Gentle base layer
Apply the main color with light pressure and leave the highlighted areas almost untouched.
Form
Darken beneath the head, arms and belly, and where the paws overlap.
Fur direction
Add short strokes following the shape of the cheeks, arms, ears and body.
Eyes and muzzle
Reserve the strongest contrast for the eyes and soften the muzzle to make it look rounded.
Natural or fantasy colors
Three palettes for coloring bears
Use a mid-tone as a base, a dark tone for depth and a light tone to soften transitions and restore highlights.
Warm earth tones
Beige, ochre, medium brown and dark brown for natural-looking fur with depth.
Cool contrast
The white of the paper, blue-gray, graphite and black to preserve highlights within the markings.
Sweet pastels
Pink, sky blue, mint and lilac for bows, hearts and imaginary characters.
Preparation and materials
Tools for a soft finish
You do not need many colors: a small selection and controlled pressure produce better blends.
Layer browns, grays and highlights without obscuring the drawing.
Test the surface with your pencils; weight alone does not establish its capacity for layers or pressure.
Softens color changes and helps create brighter fur.
Use them on hearts and bows, but test them on another sheet first.
