Mythology and ocean fantasy

Where do mermaids come from?

Stories have transformed their appearance over time, while preserving their connection to the sea, music, mystery and sailors’ journeys.

I Ancient stories

The earliest sirens

In ancient Greek tradition, sirens were initially depicted as creatures with female features and the bodies of birds.

II Cultural transformation

The fish tail

Over time, different traditions popularized the image of a sea woman with a powerful tail covered in scales.

III Contemporary art

A creative symbol

Today they appear as ocean guardians, adventurers, underwater princesses and colorful kawaii characters.

Tips from your teacher

How to color hair, scales and water.

Work on the large areas of light and shadow first. Add scales, bubbles and reflections only after establishing the overall form.

1

Flowing hair

Divide the hair into large sections and curve your strokes to suggest it floating underwater.

2

A three-dimensional tail

Apply a base color and darken the underside, folds and the junction between the tail and fins.

3

Ocean reflections

Repeat small amounts of blue, green or turquoise in the skin, hair and accessories to bring the scene together.

Ideas for choosing your pencils

Three palettes for magical mermaids.

Start with four related colors and use a dark shade to separate the shapes and increase depth.

Ocean mermaid

Blue and turquoise

A fresh combination for clear water, luminous scales and hair inspired by the ocean depths.

Coral mermaid

Pink and orange

Warm tones for a cheerful creature surrounded by corals, sea flowers and tropical fish.

Pearly mermaid

Lavender and silver

An ethereal palette for luminous skin, pearls, shells and soft moonlit highlights.

Inspiration from the community

An example of ocean color harmony.

This version uses blues and turquoises in the hair, tail and background, repeating violet in the flowers to keep the illustration unified.

1
Dominant color

Blue appears in several areas and establishes a clear underwater atmosphere.

2
Temperature variation

Turquoises and greens add depth while staying within the main color family.

3
Contrast in the face

Dark eyes and warm cheeks keep the expression as the focal point.

4
Soft background

The light texture of the water supports the figure without competing with it.
