Three different moods
Colors for your kind of winter
Choose the coat and scarf colors first. Repeat one on the hat or boots to connect the outfit. You do not need a different color for every piece.
Ice blue, lavender, and gray
Try light blue on the coat, lavender on the scarf, and soft gray on the boots. Leave the snowflakes and pompom white. Chestnut hair contrasts nicely with the cool clothing.
Brick red, cream, and brown
Use brick red on the hat and coat, cream on the scarf, and brown on the boots. If the red feels intense, apply it lightly and deepen only a few folds.
Dusty pink, mint, and beige
Combine a pink scarf with a mint coat. Use beige on the hat and repeat pink on the little braid bows. The accessories will complement the drawing without drawing attention away from the face.
Small steps, at your own pace
How to give the braids and clothes depth
Thick outlines help distinguish the pieces. Start with flat colors and add shadows once you can see how the hair and clothes work together.
Lay down the hair base
Cover the bangs and braids with a light shade. Follow each lock and leave a small highlight in its center. The white eye reflections are already drawn; preserve them as they are.
Separate the braided locks
With a slightly darker shade, mark the edge where one lock tucks beneath the next. Do this on both sides, keeping the rounded part light. You do not need many extra hair lines.
Work on the hat and scarf
Vary the pressure with one color on the hat to distinguish the knitted sections. On the scarf, add a narrow shadow under the wrap around the neck and beside the end falling over the coat.
Save the details until last
Sharpen your pencil for the snowflakes along the hem, buttons, and braid decorations. Keep the pompom white with pale gray at its base. Repeat a hat color on the gloves to connect the outfit.
For more examples to practice with, visit the coloring guides. To find similar shades among your pencils, the Colored Pencil Atlas (in Spanish) can help you choose.
When questions come up
Care for the details without overcomplicating them
Keep the snowflakes visible
Leave their centers white and color around them with a fine point. If they are too small, use a very pale shade on the hem: the black lines will stay visible without retracing them.
A simple snowy background
Leave the circles around the doll white. Add very soft blue between them or keep the background uncolored. A little shadow beneath the boots is enough to ground the figure.
Choose comfortable materials
Pencils give good control over the braid shadows. With markers, place another sheet underneath and test how the paper responds first. The drawing materials guide offers more options.
