Choose your favorite combination

Three ideas for adding color

You do not need many pencils. Choose a main clothing color, a shadow shade, and an accessory color. Pick any skin and hair tones you like.

Light and soft

White, sky blue, and gray

Leave most of the uniform the color of the paper. Add very soft sky blue under the collar and beside the pockets, and use gray on the buttons. Chestnut hair adds warmth.

A pastel feel

Lavender, pink, and cream

Try lavender on the dress and soft pink on the cuffs and shoes. Cream makes a good base for blonde hair. Reserve light areas to keep the folds visible.

A little more contrast

Mint green, turquoise, and brown

Color the uniform mint and repeat turquoise on the pocket edges and buttons. Combine light brown hair with a few darker lines to practice contrast without filling everything with shadows.

At your pace, one area at a time

How to color the clothes, hair, and details

Colored pencils let beginners work gradually. The broad dress areas are comfortable for practice; save the buttons and pocket details for when you feel like focusing on something small.

01

Apply a light first layer

Start on the skin and clothes with light pressure. Use short, even strokes without trying to reach the final color in one pass. Leave the eyes as printed if you like their shine.

02

Follow the shape of the hair

On the bangs, move the pencil from the top toward the ends. At the sides, follow each lock’s curve. Leave a lighter band in the center to suggest light without drawing individual hairs.

03

Define a few folds

Deepen the color under the collar, beside the belt, and beneath the pockets. A narrow shadow is usually enough. For a white uniform, use light gray or very soft blue only in those areas.

04

Finish with the accessories

Sharpen your pencil for the buttons, cap edge, and pocket outlines. Repeat a dress color on the shoes to connect different parts of the drawing.

For more layering and shading practice, find exercises in the coloring guides. To compare similar shades across your pencils, visit the Colored Pencil Atlas (in Spanish).

Little questions as you color

Three useful tips

White can have depth too

You do not need to cover the whole dress. Leave the center white and add a light shadow at the fold edges. Contrast with the hair and accessories helps define the clothes.

Are the details too small?

Try a sharp pencil first. You can also print a little larger, keeping the image resolution in mind, or color the accessories in one flat shade without shadows.

If you prefer markers

Place another sheet underneath and test the paper in a corner before starting. To compare materials, see this drawing materials guide.
