Tips from your teacher
How to color a bunny with soft, three-dimensional fur.
Start with light pressure, preserve bright areas and use short strokes following the shape of the face, chest, paws and ears.
Preserve the light
For white rabbits, do not fill in the entire body. Use the paper for the bright areas and add gray, blue or beige only in the shadows.
Follow the direction of fur growth
Make short strokes from the center of the face toward the edges, changing direction on the cheeks, chest and paws.
Bring the eyes to life
Preserve one or two white highlights, create a gradient in the iris and darken the upper area to add depth.
Ideas for choosing your pencils
Three palettes for coloring bunnies.
Follow natural colors or invent a kawaii version. Prepare four related hues first and add details at the end.
Soft shadows
The white of the paper, warm gray, pale blue and delicate pink for ears, nose and cheeks.
Earth tones
Cream, ochre, sienna and dark brown for warm layers and natural-looking fur.
Spring pastels
Mint, pink, lavender and soft yellow for a cheerful, sweet and entirely imaginary version.
A simple process
Color one area at a time.
Working in sections helps keep the lighting consistent and prevents the fur from becoming a flat surface.
Define the inner shadows first and keep the central area light.
Use short, soft strokes to suggest fluffier fur.
Increase contrast in these areas to guide the viewer’s eye.
Add pink to the ears and cheeks or a bright hue to clothes, flowers and eggs.
